Who can obtain a burn permit?

Only residents living in approved areas can obtain a permit. Permits are conditional and may be revoked at any time.

How can I obtain a burn permit?

You may register online using this website, or you can visit us in person at the Fire Administration Office. We are located at 245 Ontario St., Port Hope, ON. Our office hours are Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Do I need a permit?

If you want to have an open air fire (e.g., recreational fire pit, burning brush or land clearing) you will need to obtain a permit. Permits are only issued to the Owner of the property. Occupants of a property must obtain written consent from the Owner of the property to obtain a burn permit. Brush Pile burning and Land Clearing burning is only permitted in the Rural area of the Municipality of Port Hope.

What can I burn?

Residents with a Recreational Burn Permit may only burn dry clean burning wood (uncontaminated dry wood products in the form of logs). All other permit holders may burn wood or wood by-products.

Do I need to notify the Fire Department when I am going to burn?

All permit holders shall notify the Fire Department prior to conducting any open air burning. Notify the Department by calling 1-844-392-8887 each time you burn.

How will I know if a burn ban has been placed?

We will notify you via the email or phone number you have provided when registering for your permit. You may also visit our department website at www.porthopefire.ca to see if a burning ban has been placed.
